Located at 100ft on the top of a big gray building, which used to be the Derry & Toms fashion department store, and by Kensington High Street, the Roof Gardens embody the true meaning of the term hidden gem. Visitors entered the place via a side door, marked ’99 Kensington High Street’, from Derry Street, and head up to the 6th floor, in order to enjoy spectacular views and peacefulness in the heart of London.
On the 2nd of July 2016, we were treated to a traditional afternoon tea, when the Tudor Garden was beautifully set up with tables covered in long white linen cloths and traditional porcelain. Teas and treats were especially prepared for this amazing afternoon. The afternoon began with a selection of sandwiches and other savoury offerings, such as tarts and smoked salmon bilinis.
This was followed by mini desserts, which apart from traditional scones with clotted cream and lemon preserve, included macaroons, brownies, éclairs and Pimms jellies.
This was a perfect lazy afternoon to enjoy the gardens and their amazing history. They opened for the first time in 1938, but their current transformation was done by Sir Richard Branson when they become a part of the Virgin Group’s venues.
The Roof Gardens are divided into themed zones – the Spanish Gardens in a Moorish style with fountains and vine-covered walkways, the Walled Tudor Garden, which is characterised by its archways and secret corners and the English Woodland Garden, which contains nearly 100 different species of trees, a small lake, real grass, as well as 4 amazing pink flamingos under the names Bill, Ben, Splosh and Pecks. The venue also has a nightclub, bar and Babylon restaurant is located on the floor above.
The Roof Gardens are among the most wonderful landscaped gardens in the city and are filled with blooming shrubs and a number of colourful flowers, ponds, bridges, trees, as well as trellises and seated areas for those who wanted to relax by drinking their favourite kind of afternoon tea and enjoy the view. The Roof Gardens offer their guest a great getaway in the middle of the city.
